Decades of waiting are over. The Federal Government has cleared N758 billion in inherited pension liabilities dating back to 2007, delivering long-delayed financial relief to 957,045 beneficiaries under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The settlement was announced on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, by *the Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Omolola Oloworaran, at the 2026 PenCom Media Conference in Lagos*. In a keynote titled “From Reform to Reality: Renewed Hope, Pension Security for All Nigerians,” she said obligations that had passed through successive administrations had finally been settled through a N758 billion Federal Government pension intervention bond approved by the President.

“The Federal Government cleared all inherited pension liabilities, some dating back to 2007*. These obligations passed through multiple administrations, but this government chose to settle them,” Oloworaran said. She described the payment as a debt honoured rather than a promise deferred, and as a restoration of dignity to workers who had already given their years of service.

The liabilities had sat unpaid for as long as 17 to 19 years*. Reporting on the structure of the bond indicates it was designed to cover several categories of outstanding obligations, including pension increases, accrued pension rights, the Pension Protection Fund, and retirement benefits for university professors. PenCom has said the intervention also moved accrued pension rights from a 21-month backlog to a 41-month surplus.

Alongside the clearance of the old debt, the commission reported measures meant to stop a new backlog from forming*. Accrued pension rights for federal employees scheduled to retire up to December 2029 have already been credited to their Retirement Savings Accounts, following a one-time verification and enrolment exercise. PenCom has also introduced a zero-waiting-time policy that ties benefit payment to the monthly public-service salary cycle, with processing times reported to have fallen from as long as 21 months to about 48 hours in many cases.

Other adjustments announced at the same briefing widen the reach of the reform. **Under the first phase of a pension increase programme, more than 241,000 retirees in the Contributory Pension Scheme* *saw their *combined monthly payments rise from N12.15 billion to N14.83 billion, an extra N2.68 billion a month*. A separate 21-year review of pensions for 2,116 retirees of the defunct Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, whose benefits had been frozen since about 2005, produced an average increase of 1,173 per cent, with N8.7 billion in arrears paid. *PenCom cited one case in which a retiree who had received about N18,000 a month now receives about N206,000*.

The wider scheme has also grown. *Pension assets rose from N20.79 trillion in July 2024 to N31.48 trillion by July 2026, an increase of more than N10 trillion*

or about 51 per cent. Over the same period, 938,229 additional Nigerians enrolled in the Contributory Pension Scheme.

For the 957,045 people covered by the N758 billion settlement, the practical meaning is simpler than the balance-sheet language*. Entitlements that had been carried forward since 2007, and left unresolved by later governments, have now been paid. PenCom is presenting that clearance, the advance crediting of rights through 2029, and the shorter payment cycle as the core of the administration’s pension agenda under the Renewed Hope programme of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR.
