Nigeria’s Ambassador to Sweden, with concurrent accreditation to Denmark, Finland, and Norway, Ambassador Lola Akande, has formally begun her diplomatic duties in Denmark after presenting her Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Frederik X. The ceremony took place on Thursday, 8 October 2026, at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen.
Following the presentation, the Ambassador was received in audience by the King. She conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Danish monarch, the Royal Family, and the government and people of Denmark. Akande reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including climate action, peace and security, and sustainable development. She commended King Frederik X for his sustained advocacy on global sustainability and climate stewardship, and expressed Nigeria’s readiness to work closely with the Danish government, private sector, and other stakeholders to broaden economic and diplomatic engagement
Akande, a former Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, was appointed Ambassador to Sweden in March 2026 with concurrent accreditation to the other Nordic countries. *She is resident in Stockholm, where she presented her credentials to King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden on 16 September 2026
Her Renewed Hope Mandate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu focuses on advancing trade, investment, innovation, technology transfer, and sustainable development partnerships across the Nordic region, aligning with Nigeria’s economic diplomacy priorities under the Tinubu administration.
Danish strengths in green energy, shipping, maritime technology, and high-value design complement Nigerian priorities in infrastructure, ports, agriculture, and youth employment. The Nigeria Nordic Business Alliance has welcomed her appointment as an opportunity to structure stronger private-sector links.
During her engagements in Copenhagen, including the credential presentation and *related community interactions around Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary (1 October 2026), Ambassador Akande continued her consistent practice of promoting Nigerian and Yoruba culture through traditional attire. She appeared in blue Yoruba Aso-oke with a matching gele, drawing attention on social media for carrying cultural heritage onto the diplomatic stage. Aso-oke, the hand-woven prestige cloth of the Yoruba people, and Adire (Yoruba resist-dyed textiles) have become signature elements of her public appearances, projecting Nigeria’s rich cultural identity while fostering people-to-people ties with host communities in the Nordic countries.
Her presence in Copenhagen also allowed engagement with members of the Nigerian community and diaspora. Such gatherings typically feature cultural displays, national pride, and discussions on bilateral opportunities, reinforcing the role of the diaspora in strengthening Nigeria’s international relations. Akande’s approach combines formal diplomacy with cultural diplomacy, using traditional Yoruba dress—whether Aso-oke ensembles or Adire pieces to symbolise continuity, pride, and soft power.
The accreditation marks a further step in Nigeria’s engagement with the Nordic countries. With Finland and Norway still on the calendar for credential presentations, Ambassador Akande’s concurrent role positions her to coordinate practical partnerships in trade, investment, climate resilience, and institutional cooperation. Her emphasis on working with governments and the business community underscores a results-oriented agenda aimed at converting diplomatic access into concrete economic benefits for both Nigeria and its Nordic partners.
Ambassador Lola Akande’s early activities in Denmark illustrate a blend of protocol, cultural assertion, and economic focus that characterises contemporary Nigerian diplomacy in Europe
