2027: None of presidential candidates including Peter Obi is better option than Tinubu says Datti Baba-Ahmed

Former Labour Party (LP) presidential running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said none of the politicians seeking Nigeria’s presidency in 2027 has what it takes to improve the country.

Baba-Ahmed, who was the running mate to Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, made the remark during an interview on Mic On Podcast.

He also criticised Obi’s decision to leave the Labour Party and subsequently join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying the former governor of Anambra State had abandoned his comfort zone.

According to Baba-Ahmed, Obi had been adopted as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate as far back as 2024, before his eventual movement away from the party.

He said he personally cautioned Obi against joining the ADC, recalling an encounter with him at the Yar’Adua Centre.

“None of the people contesting will improve Nigeria, including Peter Obi. Peter Obi left his comfort zone; he was adopted as the presidential candidate of the Labour Party as far back as 2024,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He said he approached Obi before the latter’s planned move to the ADC and warned him against the decision.

“When he was going to join ADC, I had to go to Yar’Adua Centre ahead of him, called him aside, and they were worried: why is Datti calling Obi aside?” he said.

Baba-Ahmed said he told Obi that the ADC was not the right platform for him, claiming that subsequent developments proved his warning right.

“I told him that this is the last time that I’m coming to this place, but I want to tell you that this is not a place for you. Was I proven wrong? I was proven right, and within four months, Obi left ADC,” he said.

The former LP presidential running mate also said he was unwilling to criticise former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s political decisions, stressing that such criticism was not his focus.

“I don’t like people who contradict themselves, and I don’t want to go into criticising the politics of Atiku because that’s not what I’m about,” he said.
